In the fast-evolving world of micro mobility, Zeus Scooters has emerged as a leader, reshaping urban transportation across Europe. Founded in 2019 by Damian Young, the Irish company has grown rapidly, offering shared e-scooters and e-bikes in over 60 locations across Ireland, the UK, and Germany. What sets Zeus apart? It was the first to introduce a three-wheeled e-scooter, bringing greater stability and safety to the market.

Damian Young’s journey from a career in banking and technology to spearheading one of Europe's fastest-growing mobility companies is a testament to both entrepreneurial vision and a commitment to sustainability. With a strong Irish base for R&D, product design, and operations, Zeus continues to expand, leveraging Ireland’s innovation ecosystem to decarbonize urban transport.

As the company gears up for a major expansion in 2025—including the long-awaited launch of e-scooters in Ireland—Young reflects on the challenges of scaling a business internationally, the role of Celtic collaboration, and the innovations shaping the future of sustainable mobility.

What is Zeus Scooters?

ZEUS Scooters is the leading Irish Micro Mobility company, providing shared e-bikes and e-scooters to customers in Europe. The company was founded by Damian Young in 2019 following a career in Banking and Technology. The market for shared micro mobility has been growing over the last 5 years as demand for shared mobility increases and as cities globally seek to reduce carbon emissions and decongest city streets.

ZEUS designed the first three wheeled scooters for this market and launched in Germany in 2020. Since then, the company has grown to operate across 60 locations in UK, Ireland and Germany.

What made you want to start the company and keep it in Ireland?

I decided to found this company because of increasing demand for such services, but also to contribute to the decarbonization of cities globally. While we predominantly operate in Germany and the UK, we have centered the business in Ireland. In Ireland, we operate our central operations, R&D, product design and central functions. We have teams in each of the locations in which we operate.

In 2025, we have plans to increase our footprint in Ireland following legislative changes in 2024 allowing e-scooters to operate on Irish roads. We have a strong, talented team in Ireland responsible for our European business as well as having multiple partner Irish companies providing solutions to ZEUS globally.

You've deployed and operated almost 10,000 vehicles in more than 60 locations globally. How has being an Irish-based company made that a challenge?

Being an Irish company actually helps our business in overseas markets. Our culture, in the business but also engrained in our Irish culture, is one of positivity and “can do” approaches which is welcomed by cities overseas. We have a strong network of partners providing technology, analytics, operations and design that enhances our ability to expand in overseas markets.

Physical presence in markets is primarily through localized teams in each of the cities we operate. We create employment and contribute to local causes through our ZEUS GiveBack programme, which aims to provide charitable donations to worthy causes in each of our locations. The Irish team is regularly on the ground in our locations too and while travel is extensive, it is made easier with strong gateways and routes. We are also keen to develop our “Celtic” footprint and have active operations in Wales as well as new opportunities in locations in Scotland, England and of course Ireland.

What current innovations or expansion plans are you working on?

We are excited for 2025 as we plan our e-scooter launches in Ireland. Following legislative changes in 2024, we have been working on a brand-new design for our e-scooter to meet these requirements. This scooter will shortly be launched through two new products - ZEUS4Business and ZEUS TOURS. Watch this space for updates as we get closer to our launch dates.

Another focus for 2025 is the continued roll-out of our innovate “ZOLAR”, which is a unique, 100% solar energy mobility station. Having developed this in our German market, we are now planning to roll this out into our markets, including Wales.

We will continue to expand in the German market too and seek new opportunities across Europe, including the Celtic regions.

You've attended an Interceltic Business Forum before, why is it important for entrepreneurs from Celtic nations to be more connected?

The Interceltic Business Forum is a unique platform for like-minded and culturally similar businesses to share experiences, seek opportunities and cooperate on a range of business ideas. ZEUS participated for the first time in 2024 and has since established strong connections with other Celtic regions. We have specifically placed a focus on building our footprint in Celtic regions and have plans to expand ZEUS in these locations in 2025 and 2026.

We look forward to further deepening our Celtic relationships in 2025.
